We're with the movers and shakers now!

We hit Washington, DC today and wow, is it impressive!  It's filled with massive monuments, huge white buildings, great expanses of lawns and stunning gardens.  The Americans sure do it up right - you can't help but be inspired by their leaders like Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt when you visit their monuments.  Their words are inscribed in stone and truly celebrate freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Speaking of happiness, we were so glad we had our bikes today - it's the perfect way to take in the sights while covering a lot of ground.  We are staying in a Victorian B&B and started biking from there.  As you get closer to the centre of Washington, the Capital Building dominates the skyline from quite far away.

We had a perfect day (20 deg.) and while the Cherry Blossom Festival has just past, we were still treated to lots of beautiful blooms.

We'll just share some pics with labels, but there were so many, we're only giving you a small glimpse.

We were both very moved by the war memorials to the Second World War, Korea and Vietnam.  You could not leave them without realizing the huge human sacrifices.  The Vietnam Memorial was the most powerful for me.  It seemed so plain at first glance, but as I started reading the small names of the 52,000 dead soldiers inscribed along the massive wall, dotted with little mementos left by family members, I was moved to tears.  Again, I felt the Americans truly know how to pay tribute to their fallen heroes.
The wall behind Jim is the monument.

Jim was equally moved by the Korean War Memorial with its ghostly figures dressed in full battle gear, trudging through the rain.

After a very full day, Jim got really excited about the Washington Monument...

Pretty big, eh?

Tomorrow we'll be spending the day in some of the many famous museums around DC.
